This week I am giving away one pair of tickets to the Deerhunter show One Eyed Jacks!!! The first person to respond back to me with their name will win. I will notify the winner by email.
There are a number of great shows this week with Deerhunter and Will Oldham playing. We are spoiled in New Orleans in the amount of times Will Oldham has played here. Since I moved here in 2003 I have seen him four times and missed one. I had never had a chance to see him for ten years before I moved here. He rarely tours and his show at Tips is the only show he has till March. Go see him, this city is about the only place you can.
Also a friend of mine is hosting a site for my show list so you don't have to dig through your email to find this message if you want to access it that way. Thanks Allen.

Deerhunter is a five-piece from Atlanta, Georgia. The band, self-described as "ambient punk," incorporates a wide range of genres, those including noise rock, art rock, ambient, and post-punk.
Lead singer Bradford Cox has cited many musical influences that contribute to Deerhunter's sound, some of which include The Clean, The Fall, The Flying Lizards, Kompakt records, The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds, and Liars. However, if their influences had to be "narrowed down," Cox would note their "defining influences" as Echo & The Bunnymen, Brian Eno, David Bowie and My Bloody Valentine.
Nite Jewel turns out utterly charming, narcotic, bedroom-disco jams. Imagine Calling Out of Context-era Arthur Russell eating opium with a black rubber-bangled Madonna and Mark Hollis huddling in the corner while the 4-track tape is rolling. What's cool is how the stuff conjures thoughts of OM posterchild Russell without making the mistake of just "sounding like" him. There's just something in the lazy, hazy, listless, romantic atmosphere of Nite Jewel that puts you in the same '80s prom-dream, dance-in-the-living room, evening-cuddle vibe. Add to that the dubby, single-note, acid house melodies and beats, plus songs that are ever so distantly related to some memory of a Bangles/Cyndi Lauper/Book of Love hit.

Sat 01/24/09 *Wayne "The Train" Hancock--Alternative country favorite Wayne Hancock is that rare breed of traditionalist, one who imbues his retro obsessions with such high energy and passion that his songs never feel like museum pieces he's trying desperately to preserve. Hancock is most often compared to Hank Williams, and he can indeed be a hardcore honky tonker, but there's more to him than that: he also displays a genuine affinity for stomping rockabilly, Western swing, blues, and old-timey country à la Jimmie Rodgers. Plus, he also throws in the occasional pop standard in the manner of Willie Nelson's classic Stardust album. Hancock's devotion to classic country sounds, coupled with his strong aversion to the Nashville hit-making machine, earned him an ardent following among alternative country fans (from both the country and rock sides of the movement), as well as a fair amount of critical acclaim.
