Sun 03/01/09 **Tatsuya Nakatani | Donald Miller | Rob Cambre  Tatsuya Nakatani is considered among the strongest musicians of his generation, forging a highly personalized approach to improvisation via his self-designed percussion kit which uses elements of the trap drum set (itself a New Orleans invention) with an array of gongs and singing bowls that seem to reflect his Japanese heritage.  In performance he is remarkably focused, guiding the overall shape of the music with a masterful sense of form and dynamics.  Nakatani has collaborated extensively with both Donald Miller and Rob Cambre over the last five years, performing with them in duo and trio settings as well as guest spots with butoh dance ensemble The Death Posture. Hi-Ho Lounge. 10PM

Mon 03/02/09 **Tatsuya Nakataini | Jason Kahn + Chris Cogburn duo | Mario de Vega | Bonnie Jones No Idea Festival of Improvised Music. In a first for Anxious Sound, we are collaborating with our colleague Chris Cogburn in Austin, Texas to present a New Orleans installment of his internationally-acclaimed No Idea Festival. Each year, musician/organizer Cogburn invites a select group of individual improvising musicians to Austin for a week of concerts in a range of configurations selected by Cogburn to achive startling musical results. Musicians will play with other musicians they have just met, longtime collaborators can be put together with new partners, group players can be called upon to play solo. Preconceived notions are quickly jettisoned as the musicians respond to each other and the situation in real time yielding unique results for player and audience alike. And what a cast! Check the NoIdea site for bios, but for starters there's renowned percussion/electronics specialist JASON KAHN, known for his work with Tetuzi Akiyama, members of Voice Crack (and original drummer for Joe Baiza's Universal Congress Of... back in the day!). Also on board: the sublime + elegant percussion work of Chris Cogburn - conjurer of all manner of sustained tones from his pared down kit, and the electronic sorcery (using modified dealy pedals) of Baltimore's Bonnie Jones. Big Top. 8PM

Tue 04/14/09 **My Education (Austin's orchestrated cinematic post-rockers) perform an original score to FW Murnau's silent classic SUNRISE. The fable-like, poignant story, subtitled A Song of Two Humans, is a silent-era melodramatic masterpiece - a beautiful, atmospheric, lyrical and poetic work of art with roots in the German Expressionist movement (from 1914 to 1924). The story of corruption and redemption involves a rustic farmer in a romanticized rural town who falls prey to the seductive wiles of a city vamp in an illicit affair. He plots to murder his loving wife during a boat trip to the temptation-ridden city. His conscience is awakened during the attempted killing and he relents, and in the city the couple fall in love again. On their return trip, a tempestuous storm appears to drown the wife, but she is eventually found and the family is reunited and reconciled. With a sophisticated use of light, dark and shadows, moods and the contrast between rural 'country' life and urban 'city' life are emphasized through sun-lit and studio-lit exterior and interior shots. The moonlight, the swampy marshes, and the surface of the lake all capture the astonishing play of the light. The emerging and semi-dangerous emancipation of flapper women in the 1920s was captured in the character of the diabolical yet erotic modern City Woman. Dialectical or dichotomous oppositions are commonplace as thematic elements: sunrise/sunset, day/night, good/evil, sun/moon, corruption/purity, peace/violence, the country/the city, the Old World/the New World, nature/culture, sensuality/innocence, the blonde, faithful peasant wife/the dark sultry city vamp or femme fatale, and sin/redemption. Zeitgeist. 8PM  $7 general/$6 students & seniors/$5 members
