Fri 02/25/11 *Carnaval Brawl--New Orleans Ladies Arm Wrestling is contributing to this Mardi Gras season with a Carnaval Brawl. We'll be at Maison (508 Frenchman St.) on Friday Feb 25th at 8 pm. DJ Justin will pump it up while our eight fresh new wrestlers use their strength and cunning to smackdown the competition. Remember, there's no cover charge but bring small bills for betting and bribing. Your bets could win you sweet prizes and proceeds go to a rad organization: This event benefits the New Orleans Birthing Project which exists to reduce the high infant mortality rate among minorities by pairing pregnant women with trained volunteers who provide practical support during pregnancy and for one year after the birth of their babies. Il Giardino Armonico, winner of a 2001 Grammy Award for its Vivaldi Album with Cecilia Bartoli, was founded in Milan in 1985.

The ensemble brings together a number of graduates from some of Europe's leading colleges of music, all of whom have

specialized in playing on period instruments. The ensemble's repertory is concentrated in the main on the 17th and 18th

centuries and, depending on the demands of each program, the group will consist of anything from 3 to 30 musicians. New

foburg is a 3-day alternative music festival on March 11-13, 2011 in 15 venues on and around Frenchmen Street in the greater

Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. foburg features rock, indie rock, and alternative artists from the greater Gulf South

and national touring artists on their way to SXSW in Austin TX, which is the following week. foburg also helps revitalize a

once-thriving, historic Frenchmen Street by drawing fans of a less "traditional" genres of music to its venues. Foburg 2010

commissioning more than 650 works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos' work has also garnered numerous awards,

Dinnerstein has been gaining international attention since making a triumphant New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall's

Weill Recital Hall in 2005 where she performed Bach's Goldberg Variations. A debut solo CD of the Variations on Telarc earned

the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Classical Chart during its first week of sales. In addition to appearing on many "Best of

Over the course of a recording career spanning several decades, the Residents remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions;

cloaking their lives and music in a haze of willful obscurity, the band's members never identified themselves by name, always

appearing in public in disguise -- usually tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks -- and refusing to grant media

interviews. Drawing inspiration from the likes of fellow innovators including Harry Partch, Sun Ra, and Captain Beefheart,

the Residents channeled the breadth of American music into their idiosyncratic, satiric vision, their mercurial blend of

electronics, distortion, avant-jazz, classical symphonies and gratingly nasal vocals reinterpreting everyone from John Philip

Sousa to James Brown while simultaneously expanding the boundaries of theatrical performance and multimedia interaction. It

was commonly accepted that the four-member group emigrated to San Francisco, CA, from Shreveport, LA, at some point in the

early '70s. According to longtime group spokesman Jay Clem -- one member of the so-called Cryptic Corporation, the band's

representative body -- they received their name when Warner Bros. mailed back their anonymous demo tape, addressed simply

"for the attention of residents."
